Study Name
Genetic Modifiers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in Mutation Carriers (GEMS)
Description
This multi-center Breast Cancer Study will recruit approximately 1000 women who have had breast cancer and were tested for an inherited alteration in the BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 genes. Individuals are eligible if their test results were either positive or negative. Alterations in these genes increase the chance of developing breast and ovarian cancer. This type of research may lead to improved diagnosis, improved treatment, and possibly, prevention of inherited cancers.
Eligible candidates must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a diagnosis of invasive or in situ (DCIS) breast cancer
- Be tested for a BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 mutation either prior to the breast cancer diagnosis or no more than 3 years after the breast cancer diagnosis
Participants will:
- complete a 30-40 minute questionnaire about medical history and health habits
- sign a medical records release form for review of medical information and gene testing
- provide a blood sample
- review and sign a study consent form
