In a national effort to increase public awareness of colorectal cancer prevention, March 2000 was designated by the U.S. Senate as the first National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The Johns Hopkins Cancer Risk Assessment Service, the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry and MACGN joined this campaign by sponsoring the first annual Johns Hopkins Colorectal Cancer Awareness Week, March 27-31, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Over 2000 hospital employees, visitors, and patients stopped by an educational display set up at one of the busiest corridors of the hospital. The booth included educational videos, graphic displays and literature. Information on risk factors, screening and prevention strategies, colorectal cancer in families and current research was shared. Visitors to the display were given the opportunity to ask questions about their risk for colorectal cancer and to sign up for inclusion in MACGN and the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry. Over 700 people completed a colon cancer risk assessment and screening survey, entering them into a drawing, the grand prize being a Pentax camera. All visitors received a snack from the baskets of apples provided by the U.S. Apple Association. You too can take a bite out of colon cancer. On May 26, 2000, the Johns Hopkins Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry and MACGN went to the ballpark. Sponsored by the Eric Davis Foundation, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CancerCare, and American College of Gastroenterology, Score Against Colon Cancer was established by former Oriole, and colon cancer survivor, Eric Davis. An educational booth was set up inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. Orioles’ fans were able to learn more about their risk for developing colorectal cancer and about the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer and MACGN registries. Game-goers were urged to visit the booth during breaks through messages on the big screen. You too can score against colon cancer by calling 1-877-SCORE-123 or by visiting www.scorecrc.com. If you are hosting an event on cancer awareness and would like our participation, please call MACGN toll-free at 1-877-880-6188. |
