Howard University Cancer Center provides the following genetic counseling services:
- genetic cancer risk assessment
- education on preventive actions
- education about potential risk to other family members
- education about genetic tests for genes associated with the development of breast and ovarian cancer
- counseling explaining the significance of test results
- psychological counseling for an inherited cancer
Patients with any of the following
criteria should be referred for genetic counseling:
- cancer with a well-recognized genetic basis
- 2 or more cases of the same cancer among first-degree relatives
- multiple types of cancer within the family
- molecular tests showing evidence of an inherited variant strongly associated with a particular cancer
