Anne Arundel Medical Center provides genetic counseling, cancer risk assessment, and guidance for the use of genetic testing for both patients and physicians. A cooperative program developed with the Harvey Institute for Human Genetics at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center enables Anne Arundel Medical Center to offer its community a complete program. Karen Eanet, M.S., is available to see patients and families at the Breast Center, located in the Clatanoff Pavilion at Medical Parkway. She attends Breast Conferences where the physicians and nurses dealing with breast cancer are able to benefit from her expertise. The goals of the program are to:
- Increase awareness in both the public and the medical profession about the role genetics can play in the management of our community's health
- Offer genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment in the greater Anne Arundel community
- Integrate genetic risk assessment into the routine care of patients
When seeing patients and families at the Breast Center, Karen Eanet incorporates the same process used by the Harvey Institute for Human Genetics that utilizes the following steps:
- Family history analysis
- Cancer risk assessment using detailed pedigree analysis and quantitative models
- Assessment of other risk factors in a family history such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and stroke
- Education regarding surveillance, treatment, hormone replacement therapy and use of Tamoxifen
Every patient is required to undergo genetic counseling prior to genetic testing and to attend a follow-up appointment to review results.
